Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the knee in a patient on oral anticoagulation therapy: a case report

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a disease which affects the synovial joints and tendon sheaths. Although the exact aetiological factors are not known, we believe that recurrent haemarthrosis has a role in the aetiology of this condition. CASE PRESENTATION A 62-year-old Caucasian man presented with gradually worsening pain and stiffness in his right knee. The patient was on anticoagulation therapy and had been treated for recurrent episodes of spontaneous haemarthrosis of the knee. The International Normalized Ratio on each occasion suggested poor control of the anticoagulation therapy. A diagnosis of pigmented villonodular synovitis was made based on intra-operative findings and was further confirmed by a histopathological examination. CONCLUSION This report is presented to highlight the unusual association of haemarthrosis and pigmented villonodular synovitis.

Background: Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a tumor that arises from the synovial membrane of the joint or tendon sheaths. Two main forms include a diffuse form that involves the whole synovial lining of a joint, bursa, or tendon sheath, and a less common localized form. The diffuse form typically involves the large joints, while the localized one typically occurs around the small joints of...

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare, benign, but potentially locally aggressive and recurrent condition characterized by synovial proliferation and hemosiderin deposition inside the joints, tendon sheaths, and bursae. It usually affects the large joints such as hip, knee, and ankle. We report a case of PVNS of the knee joint in a young female which was treated by subtotal synovect...

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a disorder resulting in a villous, nodular, or villonodular proliferation of the synovium, with pigmentation related to the presence of hemosiderin. These lesions are almost exclusively benign with rare reports of malignancy. Pigmented villonodular synovitis can occur in a variety of joints and at any age but most often occurs within the knee in the young adu...
